As a woman, I often feel like the business environment is still predominately dominated by men. Many industries, such as construction, information technology, trucking, amongst others, are still overwhelmingly controlled by men, and overall it feels like they are not keen on opening the doors to let women lead those industries.
On top of the stereotype that many industries still carry, many woman are moms, and wow! What a job that is! The juggle between raising kids, taking care of your house and either developing your career or starting a business is the real deal!
Another barrier to women starting their own business is limited access to capital. Unfortunately it is quite challenging for women to gain access to financing on their own, and as on average women-led businesses are newer and smaller, they have less capital.
Fortunately, these hurtles have not stopped women from building great careers for themselves and also becoming great entrepreneurs with wonderful ideas and profitable, successful businesses.
Although according to a study led by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor – GEM, the number of women starting businesses still falls behind of men, their research shows that 231 million women are starting or have started a business in 59 different countries, which is three-quarters of the amount of men.
But why are women starting their own business?
- As per GEM research, in Canada women are 10% more likely than men to start a business due to opportunity.
- To gain market share! Yes! Many women know that they can start, run and build a successful business and share in the world’s economy.
- They want to be their own boss!
- Out of necessity. Many women are single moms and need to work from home and need to create a business to do that, or they were dissatisfied with their corporate jobs and started a business
What next for these powerful ladies?
The breaking of the stereotype trend is great news! Although the discrepancies still exist, women have made a huge progress.
So here is a few tips to start or continue your business…
- The willpower is your very first step!
